We run our fingers through each others drains.
By Ashlee Elfman

We run our fingers through each others drains.
Then through each other’s hair.
Greasy and slick from days gone by.
Our nails telling the time.
Our stories interweaving like frayed chords.
We could last forever in the attractive veil of the moon.
Take the bending rivers out of our weak veins
and spill their secrets into our ancestors' memories.
Flank our heads with anarchic weeds.
Write bastardizations of each other’s names
in the dirt.
Our temptation is our vice.
Your words push through the gates of your teeth
like jailbirds.
They flutter into the windows of my dreams.
You told me once that if you try to shear
the black sheep
your blade will get stuck and rust.
If you train the snake to lick
it will bite.
And if you get down on your knees
if you get down on your knees
You just might as well get all the way down.
